Urge Gov. Phil Scott: Keep Families Together

Governors from at least eight states (and of both political parties) have announced that they will withhold or recall National Guard troops from the border until the federal policy of separating children from their families has been rescinded.

Gov. Phil Scott - a latecomer to recognizing this inhumanity - issued a statement on June 20th that said, "Families should be kept together, and all people should be treated humanely and with dignity."

The Trump Administration's actions to use indefinite, inhumane detention of families seeking freedom and asylum as both a political bargaining chip and an immigration deterrent not only violates longstanding international law, but human decency. Regardless of political party, we must condemn these acts in the strongest of terms.

As our governor, Gov. Phil Scott we ask that you do all you can to ensure that Vermont is not party to these illegal and inhumane actions.

We call on Gov. Phil Scott to follow the lead of other governors, and:

Publicly condemn the practice of placing families seeking freedom and asylum in detention camps. The Trump Administration's decision to hold families indefinitely hostage as a political negotiating tool and an immigration deterrent is an abhorrent act, a violation of international human rights law, and runs contrary to our values as Vermonters;

Demand the Trump Administration undertake an immediate reunification of children and families separated by these egregious policies;

Publicly commit that Vermont will not send our National Guard to ANY US border to enforce human rights abuses against families and children; and,

Publicly commit that Vermont law enforcement agencies will NOT cooperate with ICE raids, surveillance, and other actions in our communities.

We call on Gov. Scott to do this immediately, and to show the state and country that he is willing to oppose injustice and protect children and families, regardless of political affiliation.

    Thank you Gov. Scott, for refusing to send our National Guard soldiers to the southern border to enforce Mr. Trump’s immigration policies. You did the right thing. But please consider distancing yourself even further from this president. He is way out of line with the old Republican Party I used to know and love. I don’t recognize the new GOP which seems determined to continue making excuses for Mr. Trump. It would be wonderful if the GOP returned to sanity so that George Will, Joe Scarborough and others, who have recently shown the courage of their convictions by resigning from the GOP, could return to the party to help offer a sane alternative to the Democratic Party, instead of the scattered, disorganized and ill-conceived mish-mash of “policies” they are currently embracing along with Mr. Trump and his irrational base.

    Dear Governor Scott,

    Ironically, not all that long ago, the Republican party touted the slogan “Family Values,” which, like any slogan, implies ownership while failing to provide a clear definition. Now the meaning of that phrase has become a travesty. Is kidnapping immigrant children a demonstration of “Family Values”? Is denying their parents their rights a way to support “Family Values”? It is appalling and cynical that the President and the U.S. government had no clear plans of how to reunite those children with their families at the Mexican border. In fact, the phrase “Family Values” seems to have become not just shallow but completely irrelevant these days, as the president is an admitted woman molester, adulterer, and a greedy liar who lacks a moral core. My only hope is that our elected officials, even the Republican ones, will take direct action to remedy the situation and prevent further injustice.

    Sincerely, Jan Thompson
