Raise Up Vermont

Raise_Up_Collage1.jpg

We support raising basic standards for workers in Vermont, and call on lawmakers to:

1. Raise job standards by making the minimum wage a livable wage.

2. Establish family and medical leave insurance for all Vermont working families.

3. Strengthen existing law to prevent employers from misclassifying their employees as “independent contractors” and denying the protections they are entitled to under the law.

----

Right now millions of people in Vermont and across the country are struggling with poverty wages, lack of paid family and medical leave to care for their families, experience wage theft or our misclassified as independent contractors, or become ill or injured at work because of dangerous working conditions.

Rights & Democracy believes that everyone has the right to live and raise their families in dignity. In the coming years, we believe Vermont can increasingly become a national leader for raising workplace standards.

Please join us in helping continue to raise the standards for working people and supporting this campaign!

My husband was only able to take three unpaid days off when our twins were born. He brought us home from the hospital and then had to go directly to work. We could not afford any additional days for him to stay and bond and help in their care while I recovered. It was a really rough time and I believe a huge factor in my developing postpartum depression and anxiety.

My daughter was stung along by her employer in part time status while working 40+ hours per week, using her employers tools and equipment, driving company vehicles, punching in on the company time clock; all the while she was promised that she would be put on full time status “soon.” It never happened! She never recieved paid sick time, health insurance, holiday pay, vacation time or retirement. All of her coworkers on full time status, recieved those benefits from the employer as part of their compensation – except for my daughter! All this time, she worked 40+ hours per week. This went on for over three years! The company is The Windham Foundation in Grafton, VT. Shame on them! IMHO.
