What: Press conference: “Rights & Democracy To Deliver 5,000 Petition Signatures Calling for VT Superdelegates to Vote for Sanders”

Who: Rights & Democracy representatives and supporters. Speakers include RAD board member Brittany Nevins, Vermont musician Bret Hughes, Shyla Nelson, Founder of the One Earth. One Voice campaign, and David Blittersdorf, Founder and CEO of AllEarth Renewables. A representative from Senator Leahy’s office has been invited to attend as well.

When: 12pm, Wednesday April 20, 2016

Where: Democracy sculpture outside Main Street Federal Building, Burlington VT

Why: A growing movement in Vermont demands our state’s Democratic superdelegates listen to the resounding will of the Democratic primary electorate. We will deliver an open letter signed by more than five thousand Vermonters, calling on superdelegates U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, Governor Peter Shumlin, Former Governor and Former DNC Chair Howard Dean, and Democratic National Committeewoman Billi Gosh to cast their vote in accordance with the 86.1% of Vermonters who supported Senator Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primaries.

Since this letter was first made public, one of its recipients, Senator Patrick Leahy has “clarified” his position, saying he will vote for the candidate who has won the majority of pledged delegates at the end of the primary season. At the press conference, Vermont community leaders will announce a petition effort to call on the rest of the superdelegates to join Leahy in this new stance. The new effort also urges DNC convention delegates to work for the elimination of the undemocratic superdelegate system all together.
