VT People's Platform - Rights and Democracy VT

VT People's Platform

We are united to fight for and secure our rights to build a true democracy. Rights guarantee that we all have what we need to live, and a true democracy gives voice to those rights.

We embrace our shared humanity and commit ourselves to a unified struggle to claim our rights, build collective power, and achieve systemic change for ourselves and our planet.

We envision a society with human rights and a vibrant democracy at its core, and our work to bring that society into existence is guided by a commitment to equity, universality, solidarity, justice, accountability and transparency, power, sustainability, and freedom:

Our People's Platform includes:

_15_bubble.pngFair Pay: Raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour (H. 93S. 40)

famli_logo.pngProtect Workers and families: Enact paid family and medical leave (H. 196 and S. 82), strengthen enforcement against worker misclassification (S. 73) and lower the barriers to workers collectively bargaining for their rights (S. 283).

Decarcerate_bubble.pngDecarcerate Vermont: Support reforms to our criminal justice system to end mass incarceration, prohibit for profit prisons (H.291), treat addiction as a healthcare issue not a criminal justice issue (S. 107) and enable a humane approach to justice that does not criminalize poverty (H. 728)

Fist_bubble.pngRacial Justice: Ensure the recommendations of the newly created Racial Justice Oversight Board are followed in order to address implicit racial bias in our criminal justice system and other state institutions in Vermont by supporting the creation of an Equity Commission for the Mitigation of Systemic Racism (S.281, H. 868).

Advance racial justice in our education system. (H.794 - Mandates the development of ethnic studies across the curriculum in K-12 education, to be implemented no later that 2021. Creates a racially and ethnically diverse advisory board to develop the guidelines for the curriculum)

Please add stopping F-35 basing at the Burlington airport and endorse the petition to put this issue on the ballot for Burlington Town Meeting. This is a health and safety issue for thousands of Vermont families living near the airport. Also, ending the transfer of hundreds of billions of dollars of our taxes each year to the military industrial complex is essential to providing healthcare justice, debt-free higher education, affordable housing, upgraded infrastructure and a fast conversion to renewable energy instead of continuing with wars for oil and massive amounts of oil used for wars.

To only reference the moral and existential crisis of continued fossil-fuel use with a call for “clean water, clean air, and clean soils” or a call for “moving communities to 100% renewables” is NOT ENOUGH. Active resistance and obstruction of the fossil-fuel megastructure must be front and center of a unified progressive movement if we are to survive to worry about fair pay and benefits, and any kind of racial and gender justice.

I support all you are trying to do. I feel we need $15 an hour minimum pay right now to keep up with the cost of living. We may not get it this soon, but a larger increase should happen real soon.
