The spring 2017 legislative session in Vermont lacked both a rejection of the Trump agenda and a bold vision for moving the state forward.
As grassroots leaders, starting with RAD’s People’s Agenda Rally on January 4, we have led and participated in many rallies and marches in opposition to toxic legislation and in support of policies that benefit people and the planet.
Now it's time to take our work to the next level.
This summer, we will organize a series of events to continue to build our base, move our elected officials, and organize for our progressive agenda under the framework of “Democracy Summer: From Protest to Power.”
Key issue campaigns we're advancing in order to win real change:
Economic Justice - We need to pass a $15 an hour minimum wage and Paid Family & Medical Leave in 2018. We've got a lot of work to do to push our legislators to move these issues forward and stop Governor Scott from vetoing these bills next year.
Healthcare Justice - Keep building the resistance to the national Republicans' heartless healthcare agenda which threatens tens of thousands of Vermonters and put pressure Governor Phil Scott who has failed to take a strong stand, and loudly call for equitably and publicly financed, single-payer healthcare in our state.
Environmental Justice (Energy Democracy + Clean Water) - Advance the movement toward a 100 percent renewable energy economy while maintaining local autonomy and democratic participation in shaping our energy systems. And, build campaigns to push for better stormwater systems and require municipalities to immediately notify the public in the case of any new drinking water violations.
Movement Politics – We must organize to build the necessary power to make our values reflected in our policies. If we are serious about building power and affecting change we must have an electoral strategy, at all levels, building and training our members to run for office. Rights & Democracy staff and leaders will hold two daylong training sessions this summer and a three-day training in the fall.
