Water is life.  We the undersigned Vermonters, call on Vermont lawmakers to commit to ensuring access to clean water with swimmable, drinkable and fishable communities for all.  We believe that Vermont needs to:

  • Develop storm water runoff systems in every community to reduce unwanted contaminants in drinking water systems and Lake Champlain.

  • Require public water systems to provide notice of drinking water violations.

  • Commit public investment into clean water systems for all communities.

The systems currently in place for processing our wastewater in the Burlington area are outdated and/or not capable of handling the same capacity as it did when it was first implimented. We need computer systems that are completely current and maintained if that is what made this most recent release possible. We may need better “safeguard” systems that will alert personell to possible issues BEFORE a release can happen. And there should be no complaint that “the money isn’t there, there isn’t enough, etc” because as Vermonters we pay some exhorbitantly high taxes FOR A REASON. We expect that money will go into funding the means for consistent and improved quality of living. That being said, it is absolutely intolerable that these wastewater releases continue to happen.
